The Gangotri national park authorities have halted mountaineering and trekking for about one week now due to snowfall in the higher reaches. Visitors from India and abroad are not able to trek to Gaumukh and Tapovan due to this and are waiting for the restriction to be lifted.
The mountainous regions have been witnessing snowfall in the higher reaches and rains in the lower altitudes for some days now. Considering the weather advisory warning about more snowfall and rain, the national park authorities have stopped mountaineering and trekking since the past one week. With snowfall forecast in places at altitudes of 3,200 metres and above, the authorities have halted the Gaumukh trek.
The Gangotri ranger Pratap Singh Panwar said that mountaineering and trekking in the national park have been halted temporarily for the safety of visitors considering the weather advisory. The restriction will be lifted when the weather clears, he said. It is pertinent to mention here that some groups of Indians and foreign nationals had arrived in Uttarkashi district to undertake the Gaumukh trek but have been unable to do so.
