A man named Santosh Ram (40) allegedly killed three women of his family early on Friday morning in Bursam Gram Panchayat area of Gangolihat Tehsil in Pithoragarh district. The accused was absconding till late on Friday night. The police suspect the accused to be a psychopath who also allegedly attempted to kill his own daughter after committing the murder.

The circle officer of Pithoragarh Mahesh Chandra Joshi told The Pioneer that Santosh Ram killed his aunt Hemanti Devi (65), her daughter-in-law Rama (24) and daughter Maya (20) by allegedly slitting their throats at about 5 AM on Friday. He said that the accused had escaped before the police reached the murder site. On the question of the possible cause of the murders, Joshi said that so far, no concrete cause appears to be the main reason for the murders. He said, “The accused used to perform Chholiya dance along with the son of his aunt (the victim) but he could not do it anymore due to a leg injury.

It is possible that he had some grudges against his cousin seeing how well he was doing. We do not know for sure yet. It does not appear that he killed them in rage or sudden anger as it was early morning and they had reportedly no conversation with each other.” He said that it was observed during the investigation that the accused might have psychopathic tendencies. “He also allegedly attempted to kill his 16-year-old daughter after she witnessed him killing the victims in the morning. She saved herself by running from there,” said the CO. He said that the police teams immediately started checking vehicles in the area and also searched the nearby forest where the accused was expected to hide. The search was conducted till late in the evening. “We will continue our search on Saturday morning as it is extremely difficult to continue the search during the night in the dense forest. The accused will be nabbed soon,” added Joshi.
