Fifth body recovered from Chamba landslide debris

169 roads blocked across State

The fifth body was recovered late on Monday night from the debris of the landslide which occurred at Chamba in Tehri district on Monday. Four four-wheelers, three two-wheelers and the municipality toilet were buried in the landslide debris. The authorities also served notice to seven families living in four buildings near the landslide site. They have shifted to the homes of their relatives. The authorities have also provided Rs four lakh ex-gratia each to the family members of the deceased. District magistrate Mayur Dixit stressed on the need for public awareness considering the geography and also said that all possible assistance will be provided to the affected families. Meanwhile, the Tehri MLA Kishore Upadhyay called officials of the THDC and Border Roads Organisation to the site for finding a solution to the landslide problem. He also appealed to the public to remain alert considering the rains and asked the municipality executive officer to facilitate a geological survey of vulnerable areas of Chamba.

Meanwhile, a total of 169 roads were reported to be blocked in various parts of the State on Tuesday evening. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, one State highway, one district road and nine rural motor roads were blocked in Uttarkashi district while one national highway, three State highways, one main district road and 13 rural motor roads were blocked in Tehri district. Sixteen rural motor roads were blocked in Rudraprayag district, three State highways, two main district roads and 22 rural motor roads were blocked in Pauri district and three State highways, two main district roads and 24 rural motor roads were blocked in Dehradun district. Four rural motor roads were blocked in Almora district, one State highway and 12 rural motor roads were blocked in Nainital district, one national highway and two rural motor roads were blocked in Bageshwar district and the Karnprayag-Gwaldam motor road was blocked near Shimalsain along with 36 rural motor roads blocked in Chamoli district. Eight rural motor roads were blocked in Pithoragarh district.
