The Haridwar Road which has been dug up for civic works on both sides on the approach to the Rispana bridge leading to the Vidhan Sabha building may worsen the already bad traffic situation in the area as the Assembly session begins on Tuesday. The dug up stretches of various roads have been causing serious traffic problems for commuters for the past few weeks and it is expected to get worse during the four-day Assembly session when the movement of ‘VIPs’ and various protest rallies increase significantly in the area close to the Assembly.
Considering these issues, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar said that he recently held an inspection of the area and directed the officials of the departments concerned to complete the construction works soon by coordinating with each other. He said that the officials have been asked to make required arrangements on stretches dug up for construction work to minimise the woes of commuters. They have been asked to ensure that no one gets injured or becomes a victim of an accident due to ongoing construction work. Besides this, additional personnel will also be deployed in the area for a smooth flow of traffic and to tackle related issues on time. The SSP said that the route diversion and barricading will be done considering these issues and route plans will be changed daily as per the situation and requirements.
Meanwhile, observers point out that though the police may try to discharge their duty, it is practically more difficult to do the needful on a road which affords no space for pedestrians and even the police as these spaces have been excavated and are now open trenches filled with dirty water. During protest rallies, it will be more challenging for the police to manage the situation especially as school children along with other citizens walk across this stretch which is blocked to vehicular traffic.
