George Everest cartography museum inaugurated in Mussoorie

Tourism and Culture minister Satpal Maharaj inaugurated the cartography museum at the George Everest estate in Mussoorie on the occasion of World Tourism Day on Wednesday. He also named the helipad on the site after mathematician Radhanath Sikdar who had first calculated the height of Mount Everest.
Speaking on the occasion, he appreciated the mountaineering and survey work done by Everest and Sikdar while dedicating the George Everest cartography museum to all the great mountaineers of India. This unique museum has exhibits on the great trigonometric arc survey conducted by Everest and the survey of various Himalayan peaks by Indian mountaineers. Information about the various instruments used in the survey is also provided in the museum.
Maharaj informed that in the best tourism village competition organised by the Government of India, Sarmoli village in Pithoragarh district had received the best tourist village award. The government had sought a list of tourist villages from all the States along with relevant details. Information about various tourism activities and facilities like homestays in the tourist villages were sought in the presentation with the entries. The village in Pithoragarh district which has been awarded is a prime example of community participation in tourism, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Mussoorie municipal council chairman Anuj Gupta welcomed the gathering to the museum and requested all to inform tourists about this new destination.
