The Bharatiya Janata Party has claimed that 75 per cent of the votes cast on Friday were in its favour, adding that the people voted to re-elect Narendra Modi to a third consecutive term.
The BJP State media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said on Saturday that the public came out to vote for Modi, as the party was expecting. Regarding the comparatively low voter turnout, he said that the opposition accepting its defeat before polling, the apathy of the core voters of the opposition and the ongoing marriage season were the main reasons for it.
Interacting with the media here on Saturday, Chauhan said that the figures and feedback being received regarding the polling are positive. “The supporters of the BJP and PM Modi had already decided to re-elect PM Modi to a third term and hence they voted for us in bumper numbers. More than the victory, the margin matters more for us because PM Modi is moving forward on the policy of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’. Our efforts were aimed at winning the trust of as many citizens as possible, in which the party was successful,” he said.
On the subject of low voter turnout on Friday, Chauhan said that the traditional supporters of the Congress and other opposition parties abstained from voting considering the defeat of the opposition certain. He said, “The prominent leaders of the opposition refused to contest the election and their important leaders from Delhi did not come to campaign in Uttarakhand. Due to such factors, the Congress supporters also maintained their distance from the polling stations. Apart from this, the marriage season and the sudden rise in temperatures also affected the voter turnout,” the BJP State media in-charge said.
