Five people died in two separate road accidents in Pithoragarh and Rudraprayag districts on Monday. A vehicle carrying eight people fell into a 200 metre deep gorge in the Ancholi area near Andoli in Pithoragarh district early on Monday.
The people were returning home after attending a wedding ceremony. The locals told the police that it appeared that the driver of the vehicle lost control after which it fell into a gorge about 200 meters deep, the official said. They said that the locals informed authorities and a search and rescue team of the State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) led by assistant sub-inspector Sundar Singh Bora reached the spot along with the police. However, locals had rescued four people and sent them to a hospital for treatment by the time police and SDRF reached there.
The officials said that the rescue team coordinated with local police and people and worked together to retrieve the bodies of four deceased people from the gorge. The deceased have been identified as Ajay Kumar (32), Pawan Kumar (40), Angad Kumar (34) and Kailash Kumar (48). The vehicle was completely wrecked in the accident and rescue teams struggled a lot to bring the victims up from the gorge. The bodies were handed over to the police to carry out further proceedings, the officials added.
The police speculated that the driver might have dozed off while driving the vehicle leading to the accident in the early morning. In the other accident, a vehicle in Bhunka village of Rudraptayag district crashed on Monday and fell into a gorge. The vehicle was carrying two men out of whom one died on the spot and the other was rescued by the locals who sent him to the nearby hospital for treatment. The deceased and the injured were identified as Pritam Singh (24) and Suraj Singh (35) respectively.
