Two children saved by tree stopping bus from falling down gorge

Wednesday, 24 APRIL 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Two children had a miraculous escape in Pithoragarh district on Tuesday when their school bus was going to fall into a gorge but was stopped by a tree on the mountainside. Both students were in shock because of the incident and sustained some injuries but their health was stable, the officials said. According to them, the incident occurred in the Berinag area of Pithoragarh district on Tuesday morning when the driver of a private school bus carrying students observed some cables lying on the road. He stopped the bus and came out to remove the power supply cables off the road when the bus rolled down into the nearby gorge. They said that although most of the children and teachers were able to exit the bus in time, two children remained inside when the bus fell about 50 feet down the road. However, a tree on the mountainside fortunately stopped the bus from falling further down the gorge which prevented any further harm to the children. Soon, one of the teachers helped the injured children to get out of the bus. The children had some injuries to their heads and hands and were immediately taken to the nearby community health centre (CHC) in Berinag for treatment. The officials said that the accident site is only about one kilometre away from the Berinag tehsil office and authorities were soon called at the spot. The school administration was also informed about the incident and the staff reached the CHC to inquire about the well being of the children. The officials said that the police were aware that the incident could have been a fatal accident if the bus had not stopped due to the tree. The police questioned the driver and teachers about the incident and how the bus reportedly moved down the mountainside endangering several lives. The police will take further action accordingly, they added.
