The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has started making recharge pits in several locations prone to waterlogging because of poor drainage systems. This initiative is aimed at preventing waterlogging, promoting water retention and conservation, and recharge the water table. The corporation has created five recharge pits so far this year and plans to create a total of 30, the Dehradun municipal commissioner, Gaurav Kumar said. He said that the purpose of these pits is to enable water to percolate into the ground before it can accumulate, thus helping to prevent waterlogging. These pits will also enable rainwater to replenish the underground aquifers, helping to improve the groundwater level. Identified locations prone to waterlogging are being addressed with the creation of recharge pits, including areas like Raipur Road, Nehrugram, Jogiwala, Shastrinagar and other areas from where frequent complaints of waterlogging are received. This initiative is aimed at protecting vulnerable areas from waterlogging and improving the overall situation in the city during monsoon, Kumar said. He said that the corporation had created 50 recharge pits last year that helped in minimising waterlogging in several areas. Considering this, the MCD aims to create 30 more this year. The MCD teams have been directed to finish the work soon, he added.
