In an important measure the State government has decided to set up education centres for the children of migrant labourers. A decision in this regard was taken in the meeting of the officers of the education department held at the auditorium of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan here on Tuesday.

The meeting was chaired by education minister Dhan Singh Rawat. Addressing the meeting the minister said that there are thousands of migrant workers in the State working in railway, hydropower and road projects. He said that in the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020, a provision to set up migrant education centres for imparting primary education to the children of migrant labourers has been made. The minister directed the officers to set up these centres by conducting surveys of the areas where such labourers reside in large numbers. He also asked the officers to expedite the process of construction of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose residential hostels.

The department is planning to construct one such hostel in every district headquarter for the poor, helpless and destitute children. The minister informed that at present there are 13 functional Neta Subhash Chandra Bose residential hostels in the State and seven more such hostels will be constructed. The students residing in these hostels are given admissions in nearby schools. The government of India bears the cost of boarding, lodging and studies of such students. In the meeting the minister also directed that one nodal officer should be appointed for monitoring and compilation of every activity of the schools so that the State finds a leading place in the Performance Grade Indicators (PGI) of the school education at national level.

The director general (DG) school education Banshidhar Tiwari and other officers of the education department attended the meeting.
