Drop in greenery, rise in pollution fuelling skin allergies in Doon

The escalating pollution from vehicles and deforestation has resulted in a rise in the incidence of skin allergies in Dehradun, the skin specialists here said. It has been observed that the cutting down of trees for urbanisation has been on the rise throughout the city. Due to such factors, skin specialists have noted a significant increase in skin allergy cases among Dehradun residents.
Commenting about the change in the atmosphere and its link to the ailments, head of the dermatology department at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital Dr Shruti Barnwal highlighted the correlation between the changing environment and the prevalence of these ailments. She informed that she treats an average of 200 to 300 cases of skin allergies in the OPD at the hospital. Emphasising the detrimental impact of increased pollution and deforestation in the city, she said that these factors have caused a rise in skin allergy cases. Apart from this, Barnwal added that she has observed that the act of people spitting in the open is also contributing to the prevalence of various ailments. It is imperative for everyone to prioritise hygiene in their surroundings and promote fitness. She further added afforestation plays a significant role in this regard. To address skin allergies, individuals have been advised to plant a sapling near their residence, she added.
Another skin specialist, Dr Anil Arya highlighted that the increase in temperature indirectly leads to skin allergies. The current rise in temperature is evidently linked to deforestation in the city, resulting in a notable rise in skin allergies. Arya recommended maintaining skin hygiene to combat these allergies and urged individuals to seek consultation from doctors rather than relying on chemists or home remedies.
