The Congress has alleged that the law and order situation in Uttarakhand has deteriorated considerably with neither women nor journalists being safe in the State. The party’s chief spokeswoman in Uttarakhand, Garima Mehra Dasauni said this after a journalist from a digital news outlet in Rishikesh was allegedly beaten up by members of the liquor mafia in Rishikesh. Journalist Yogesh Dimri sustained injuries to his head and a leg and has been admitted to AIIMS Rishikesh for treatment, she said.
The Congress leader said that Dimri had been consistently reporting on bootlegging, due to which some elements assaulted him and injured him. She exhorted the media fraternity in the State to unite in support of him and against the liquor mafia. Dasauni also requested the State government to order an inquiry in the case and ensure punishment to the culprits. It is the duty of the media to raise awareness on the immoral and illegal activities in society. She questioned how journalists will risk their lives to discharge their responsibilities if such a serious attack is carried out on a member of their fraternity.
She stated, “The atmosphere in Uttarakhand has deteriorated with neither women nor journalists being safe. The State government, police and administration are responsible for ensuring that the law and order is strengthened so that criminal elements do not thrive. Those who attacked Dimri should be caught at the earliest and they should face strict legal action so that such an incident is not repeated in the future,” she said. The Congress spokeswoman also questioned who is responsible for clamping down on the illegal liquor trade in the State.
