The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has deployed 24 additional vehicles and 40 sanitation workers in view of Deepawali. A special drive will target areas prone to garbage accumulation, in collaboration with local shopkeepers as waste generation increases during the festive season.
The Dehrdaun municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar stated that the city’s garbage output spikes to 450-500 metric tonnes daily during Deepawali, compared to the average quantity of about 350 metric tonnes on a daily basis. He informed that the MCD has deployed 16 JCBs, eight tractor trolleys and 40 workers to enhance waste collection and disposal during the festival season. Besides this, sanitation inspectors will also monitor cleanliness efforts and be held accountable for any lapses. Kumar assured that all preparations for maintaining sanitation during the festival are in place.
Meanwhile, several sanitation workers involved in door to door garbage collection service delayed their duties on Tuesday morning, citing unpaid allowances from the companies that hired them. They also demanded their Diwali bonus sooner. However the companies’ representatives claimed that the MCD recently deducted a significant amount from their monthly charges and is also yet to pay them some dues due to which they are unable to pay to their sanitation workers. Talking about this, Kumar said that the MCD will soon issue the pending funds and the workers will get their pending allowance and bonuses within two days.
