After the two companies managing garbage disposal work in 73 wards of Dehradun continued to provide substandard services despite several notices, the administrator of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) and district magistrate Savin Bansal ordered the corporation to issue their termination letter. In a meeting with Dehradun municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar and other officials concerned on Thursday, the DM expressed dissatisfaction with Watergrace and Econ waste management companies’ substandard services and failure to meet the required standards.
The district administration had previously issued notices to both companies, urging improvements in their waste collection operations. However, despite these warnings, no significant progress was reportedly observed. Consequently, Bansal instructed MCD to issue termination letters to end their contract with these companies. He also directed the start the selection process for a new waste management company to take over. The district administration has imposed fines totalling Rs 25 lakh on the companies for their inadequate performance so far.
The DM said that until a new company is selected, the existing contractors must continue waste collection and disposal in the city. If the companies fail to comply with this order, the administration will confiscate Rs 85 lakh submitted as the guarantee money by the companies besides blacklisting them, DM added.
