In order to ensure proper garbage segregation at the household level, the Municipal Corporation of Rishikesh (MCR) has introduced a systematic schedule for waste collection in which dry waste and wet waste are collected separately on alternate days. This approach aims to streamline the disposal process and encourage residents to participate in waste segregation, the Rishikesh municipal commissioner Shailendra Negi said. He informed that the MCR has started this system to gradually develop a habit of segregating domestic waste among the people. “The response to this initiative has been largely positive, with most locals cooperating with the new system. Initially, some residents were confused about the segregation process but with time and guidance, they have started disposing of their garbage properly. We have also been getting 100 per cent segregated waste from some wards,” Negi said. He informed that to address the issue of non-compliance among locals, the MCR has also begun identifying individuals who consistently fail to segregate their waste, despite repeated reminders. “The corporation plans to issue notices to these habitual offenders and will consider legal action against those who continue to violate the rules. We have also stated this clearly to locals that all residents are required to pay monthly charges for the door-to-door garbage collection service, irrespective of whether they use it or not. This measure is intended to discourage the dumping of waste in public areas and ensure compliance with the segregation policy,” the commissioner said. He said that the dumping process of segregated garbage is quite easier and cheaper than the unsegregated waste. Negi expressed optimism about the initiative and said that most residents have adopted the practice of segregating waste and the MCR aims to achieve 100 per cent compliance with segregated garbage disposal through its door-to-door service in the near future.
