Committed to address traffic, road safety & drug trafficking challenges: DGP Deepam Seth

The 1995 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Deepam Seth assumed charge as Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttarakhand on Monday. Seth said that as DGP, he is committed to addressing Uttarakhand’s evolving security challenges along with traffic and road safety. He said that he will prioritise enhancing public safety through proactive law enforcement and efficient disaster management. His focus includes curbing drug trafficking, fortifying cybersecurity and fostering transparent, citizen-friendly policing.

He stated that he plans to implement robust traffic management strategies to prevent road accidents and ensure public safety. After assuming charge in police headquarters, he held a meeting with senior police officials.

While interacting with media, Seth emphasised on the importance of tailored initiatives to protect women and children, recognising their critical role in creating a secure and inclusive society. Hailing from Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Seth completed his senior secondary education at Sherwood College in Nainital and went on to earn an engineering degree from BITS Pilani. His commitment to learning extended throughout his career, culminating in a Master’s degree in Police Management from Osmania University in 1997 and a PhD from IIT Roorkee in 2022. His doctoral research delved into the impact of strategic planning and communication on team effectiveness, particularly in policing mega events. Seth’s IPS career began in 1995 and his early postings included serving as superintendent of police in Tehri and Jyotiba Phule Nagar and as commandant of the 41st PAC Battalion in Meerut. His international experience includes a stint as project manager with the United Nations Peace Mission in Kosovo.

In Uttarakhand, Seth served as senior superintendent of police in Nainital and later as deputy inspector general (DIG) of Garhwal Range, overseeing crime, law and order and training. As inspector general (IG), he handled critical responsibilities in law and order, the Special Task Force (STF) and police headquarters. His tenure in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) saw him lead key divisions, including North West Frontier in Ladakh and personnel and vigilance operations in New Delhi. Before assuming his role as DGP, he was serving as additional director general (ADG) in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). His contributions have earned him numerous accolades including Shri Bhubananda Misra Memorial Trophy and the Esprit de Corps medal in 1996 during his training at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA).

He was also awarded the United Nations medal for his service in Kosovo (2004), with Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2011 and President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2021. He also got ITBP’s DG’s Insignia and Commendation Roll in Silver and Gold in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Besides this, he also got the High Altitude Medal, Police Special Duty Medal and Union Home Minister’s Special Operations Medal for Operation Snow Leopard in Ladakh in 2021.
