The Bharatiya Janata Party’s aim is to win all 100 seats in ensuing urban local body elections in Uttarakhand and the Congress leaders will be nowhere to be seen after the elections. Addressing the media, BJP’s State spokesman Suresh Joshi said that BJP is approaching the elections with full preparation and unity under the leadership of its State president Mahendra Bhatt and chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
Joshi opined that after the elections, the Congress might be rendered insignificant in the State. He stated that the nomination and withdrawal processes for the elections have been completed and senior BJP leaders will address the media soon across the districts to communicate their agenda to the public. Highlighting the BJP’s strategy he said, “We aim to showcase the achievements of the State government, the developmental work supported by the Central government and the progress made in local bodies including municipal corporations, municipalities and municipalities.” Joshi said that in its campaign, the party plans to highlight the work it has accomplished in the past and present its vision for future development. He also criticised the opposition, accusing it of obstructing development. “While we focus on development, the opposition tries to hinder our progress at every step. When Congress was in power at the centre, they almost stopped budget provisions for Uttarakhand. Now, when the State is progressing with the centre’s support, they continue to spread negativity,” Joshi said.
He also accused the opposition of misleading and inciting unemployed youth, obstructing recruitment processes and creating confusion through baseless protests and demands for investigations. Joshi also criticised Congress for attempting to divide society along caste and religious lines. He highlighted the BJP’s efforts to improve education by establishing Sanskrit and medical universities while accusing Congress of promising to create a Muslim University when in power. He claimed that the BJP is working for the welfare of all sections of society, while Congress promotes divisive politics. Responding to questions about defections from Congress to BJP, Joshi stated that many leaders are drawn to the BJP’s ideology and leadership.
He dismissed Congress’ allegations of coercion as baseless, asserting that dissatisfaction with Congress’s leadership and policies drives its members to join the BJP voluntarily.
