The Uttarakhand government has directed the Higher Education department to provide 50 per cent reservation in the student union elections of State universities and colleges for girl students without any further delay.

The Higher Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat has directed the vice chancellors of state universities to revise the representation structure in student unions and student councils to reserve 50 per cent posts for girls.

On Saturday, Rawat held a virtual review meeting of the department in which reprimanded department officials for the delay in implementing the decision to provide 50 per cent representation to female students in student union elections in State university campuses and colleges. He directed the officials to send a proposal to the government within three days to ensure reservation for girls.

Rawat said more than 65 per cent of students in State university campuses and colleges are girls, therefore, it is essential to ensure their adequate participation in the student union and student councils. He stated that 50 per cent representation for female students will provide an opportunity to effectively raise their problems and suggestions on the student union and student council platforms. Strong participation of female students on student forums will not only boost their self-confidence but also promote women’s leadership in colleges and universities, he added.
