Kafal, Rhododendron ripening prematurely due to global warming

PNS/ NAINITAL

In latest news from Uttarakhand, a senior professor of Botany at the DSB campus of Kumaun University Suresh Singh Bargali said that the   climate change effects have are now visible in the trees in Nainital, too. To buttress his point, he cited the premature ripening of Rhododendron and Kafal in the forests of Nainital this year. He ascribed it to global warming. The Kafal usually ripens in April but this time it is ripening from the beginning of February. Even Rhododendron which blooms from the first week of March are showing premature ripening trend. The flowers are coming up one and half months earlier. “The weather is drying up; the mountains have started warming up too. Scanty snowfall and rain in winter are making the temperature favourable for premature ripening of these plants endowed with immense health benefits,” he added.
