The Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Nilesh Anand Bharne reached Haridwar on Monday to review the security arrangements for the Kanwad Yatra as it entered its peak phase. He visited the Kanwad Mela area and later monitored the entire zone through CCTV surveillance at the central control room.
He directed all officers to remain on the roads and ensure that devotees move steadily towards their destinations without obstruction. Bharne instructed that no vehicles should be allowed to park on highways or other routes and all police personnel must perform their duties with firmness and politeness.
He emphasised that vehicles should be released from parking only after all Kanwadiyas in that vehicle have returned after collecting water. He also said diversion should be implemented immediately when needed. Monitoring at key locations including highways, parking areas and Har Ki Pauri should be maintained with vigilance, Bharne said. In the final phase of the Yatra, Haridwar has seen a sharp rise in the arrival of Dak Kanwadiyas, whose movement depends on their speed.
Managing this crowd has become more challenging for the administration. While earlier efforts were focused on safely guiding foot pilgrims through the city routes, the current phase requires regulating fast-moving Dak Kanwadiyas on highways and other stretches. For the administration, these two days are expected to be critical days in ensuring the smooth flow and safety of pilgrims.
