Doon jewellers shift focus to lightweight jewellery for wedding season

With the advent of the wedding season, jewellers in Dehradun have begun preparing to stock lightweight jewellery in their shops. They attribute the rising prices of gold to a growing preference among residents for lighter options. Although gold prices have decreased marginally after Deepawali, they are still not considered to be more affordable for customers. It is expected that gold prices may rise again in the future, prompting jewellers to stock up the light weight jewellery in anticipation of sales during the upcoming wedding season.
During Deepawali, the price of gold reached Rs 1,35,000 for 24 carats per 10 grammes. Similarly, silver prices surged to an average of Rs 2,00,000 per kilogramme. However, post-Deepawali, gold prices have seen a slight decline.
The State general secretary of the Uttaranchal Jewellers’ Association Gurjeet Singh stated that after Deepawali, gold prices decreased from Rs 1,32,000 to Rs 1,26,000 for 24 carats per 10 grammes. On Saturday, the price was recorded at Rs 1,27,000 for the same weight and quality. Singh said that there is currently uncertainty surrounding gold prices, which may rise in the future. He said that the fluctuation in gold prices is influenced by corrections in international financial policies. With the wedding season approaching and considering the fluctuating gold prices, they have increased their stock of lightweight jewellery to cater to customer preferences. He also highlighted that now is a good time to buy silver, as its price has decreased from Rs 2,00,000 to Rs 1,55,000 per kilogramme.
Another jeweler Rahul Nagpal said, “It’s true that gold prices have fallen after Deepawali, but not significantly enough. A few months ago, gold prices were around Rs 80,000 or Rs 90,000. The decrease from Rs 1,35,000 to Rs 1,26,000 is not substantial for customers. With the wedding season approaching, we are preparing to meet customer demand by stocking more lightweight jewellery.”
Similarly, jeweller Vansh Raj expressed concerns about the wedding season, stating that high prices during Deepawali affected sales. He said that people are likely to prefer lightweight jewellery for upcoming weddings, prompting him to begin stocking accordingly.
