In the ongoing winter season, the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital has reported a rise in angioplasty surgeries, with an increase of 20 to 25 per cent compared to the summer season and other times of the year. Stating this, an associate professor in the Cardiology department, Dr Amar Upadhyay said that there is a notable uptick in heart-related issues during winter, which can lead to heart attacks and other complications.

“The primary factors contributing to heart issues in winter include a higher incidence of heart attacks and others, as the drop-in temperature forces the body to adjust to colder conditions. This adaptation process can lead to an elevation in blood pressure and heart rate, along with increased blood viscosity. These elements collectively heighten the risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular events during this time of year,” he explained.

Upadhyay further said that the GDMC hospital has recorded an increase in angioplasty surgeries, with a rise of 20 to 25 per cent compared to other seasons.  “These surgeries primarily involve patients suffering from heart attack-related conditions. Symptoms of a heart attack may include vomiting, chest pain, nausea and other associated issues,” he said.

He also categorised the data from the ongoing winter months, revealing that 65 per cent of the patients undergoing these surgeries are male, while 35 per cent are female. Further, it was observed that these surgeries involve 12 per cent of individuals aged 35-45 years, 19 per cent aged 45-65 years, 35 per cent aged 55-65 years and 25 per cent aged 65-75 years, among other age groups.

He added that individuals who smoke as well as those with diabetes and other health conditions are the most likely to require these surgeries. To prevent such issues during the winter season, individuals are urged to take necessary precautions, including protecting themselves from the cold. “Ensure physical activity in the afternoon instead of early morning during this period and consume a high-protein diet,” he advised.
