MCD to install 300 dustbins in major commercial areas from March 1

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is set to install 300 dustbins in major commercial areas across the city beginning March 1 to strengthen waste management and improve sanitation. Additional municipal commissioner Praveen Kumar said that the dustbins will be placed in high-footfall areas including the Clock Tower, Paltan Bazaar area and adjoining lanes, where garbage accumulation remains a recurring issue due to heavy daily movement of shoppers, vendors and visitors.

The installation work, including placement and related logistical arrangements, will be carried out by the municipal team. The move is aimed at providing accessible waste disposal facilities to shopkeepers, street vendors and the general public to curb littering on roads and footpaths. Kumar said that the initiative is part of ongoing urban sanitation measures and is intended to improve cleanliness standards in commercial hubs. The officials have flagged improper waste disposal in busy marketplaces as a contributing factor to clogged drains and unsanitary conditions, particularly during peak business hours.

The move comes amid the MCD’s push to improve its performance in India’s annual Swachh Survekshan rankings. According to deputy municipal commissioner Tanvir Marwah, the latest Swachh Survekshan toolkit carries about 12,500 marks and assesses cities on parameters such as source segregation, door-to-door collection, transportation and waste processing.

The civic body has urged traders and the public to cooperate by using the dustbins responsibly and maintaining cleanliness in market areas. The officials said that the monitoring teams will review compliance after installation to assess the effectiveness of the measure.
