Reeling under pressure in the aftermath of the brutal murder of a student in Premnagar, Dehradun police have instructed both police and authorities of colleges operating in the area to take effective measures to stop recurrence of such an incident. Notably, Premnagar has earned notoriety for frequent clashes involving students.
The senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pramendra Dobal said that a meeting had been held with all police stations in-charge across Dehradun city. They have been directed to visit areas with concentration of colleges, institutes and hostels. He also asked them to collect inputs about students prone to hooliganism and then to inform the institutions where they study to make sure that they are expelled if required. Further, they were asked to conduct regular day and night checking in such areas with a high concentration of students. Plus, students found roaming about these areas in groups after a specific hour at night will be taken to the police station and action will be taken against them.
Dobal also directed the PGs and hostel owners to inform them immediately about such incidents. If they fail they will face action, the SSP warned.
Meanwhile, the murder has left the residents of Premnagar in panic. Some students said that this murder might bring about more murders in its wake. “The murder could hardly be left unavenged,” a student said.
Restaurant owners sounded concerned, too. One restaurant owner said that such fights have been happening for the last three to four years, affecting their business.
Nitesh, the owner of the restaurant where the recent incident was reported to have taken place, said that he had come from Bihar to start his business and had opened the restaurant on March 13. “I was completely unaware of this area’s proneness to violence,” he said. He dismissed the report as rumour that the boys involved in the fight had been in his restaurant before the fracas broke out.
