Irregularities in school fees unacceptable: SCPCR

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Geeta Khanna has stated that any irregularities in school fees are unacceptable. She said that the fee increases exceeding 10 per cent are against the rules. Khanna emphasised that imposing extra charges like composite fees, subscription fees, building fees or camera fees is inappropriate. Khanna urged parents to be aware and called for transparency from schools.

She further expressed her hope that schools will not limit themselves to merely imparting knowledge but will strive to cultivate an environment of security, discipline and moral education—creating a cultured family atmosphere for students.

Khanna emphasised that when choosing a school for our children, we must recognise that education goes beyond grades and textbooks. “The true purpose of a school should be to instil values, discipline and foster strong personalities in children. We should seek schools that not only focus on academics but also teach the art of living. Nowadays, we are witnessing concerning incidents—such as school bus accidents and increased aggressive behaviour among children—as well as minor issues that lead to mental stress and missteps,’’ she said.

Khanna added that these incidents prompt us to question whether we are guiding our children in the right direction. It is evident that it is time to equip children with life skills, emotional balance, and moral values in addition to academic education.
