Fast food and poor lifestyle making Uttarakhand’s youth sick: Dr Joshi

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

The growing number of young people suffering from lifestyle diseases has become a major concern for Uttarakhand, according to Dr KP Joshi of Char Dham Hospital. He said that diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart ailments, liver disorders, kidney problems and metabolic syndrome are increasingly being diagnosed among people aged between 15 and 45 years. Joshi said recent Health department reports indicate that nearly 40 to 50 percent of the State’s population is either suffering from diabetes or is at risk of developing the disease. “If half of the population becomes diabetic, it will raise serious questions about the health of society and the future of the state,” he said. He added that clinical data collected by him also points to an alarming trend. According to him, out of every 10 patients visiting the hospital with serious health issues, four to five are young people. He said cases of heart disease, hypertension and other lifestyle related illnesses are increasing rapidly among the younger generation. Joshi attributed the rise in these diseases to unhealthy eating habits, the growing consumption of fast food and junk food, lack of physical activity, inadequate sleep and substance abuse. He said many youngsters are moving away from traditional food habits and healthy daily routines, which is affecting their overall health.

To tackle the issue, Char Dham Hospital has launched the “Healthy Uttarakhand, Healthy India” campaign. The initiative aims to create awareness about healthy eating, regular exercise, proper sleep and disease prevention among the public.

Joshi also called for stricter implementation of food safety regulations and urged food businesses to ensure that safe and quality food products are served to consumers. As part of the campaign, the hospital is providing free guidance on healthy lifestyles and preventive healthcare to residents.
