Taking note of increased accident risks due to slippery roads and poor visibility during the monsoon season, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Dehradun division, has conducted a special, intensive enforcement drive in the city to ensure vehicle safety and strict compliance with traffic rules. During the operation, 92 vehicles were issued challans for violations of the Motor Vehicles Act and eight vehicles were seized for serious irregularities.

According to the officials, as part of the campaign, vehicles were thoroughly checked on major roads and intersections, including the stretches of Ajanta Chowk to Canal Road, EC Road-Survey Chowk and Lansdowne Chowk and Kanak Chowk.

A total of five teams were deployed for this special campaign, including one interceptor team, two enforcement teams and two bike squad teams from headquarters, the officials informed.

They further said that special checks had been conducted on vehicle brakes, handbrakes, tire conditions, wipers, indicators, fog lights and other essential safety equipment. “We also made two-wheeler riders use BIS/ISI certified standard helmets. Besides, we provided necessary information on safe driving to the drivers,” said an officer.

Speaking of the initiative, the regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) Anita Chamola, said that during the rainy season, roads become slippery, visibility decreases and the likelihood of accidents increases. “Therefore, every driver/rider must be extra alert. They must thoroughly check all essential safety equipment, including brakes, handbrakes, tires, wipers, indicators and fog lights, before embarking on a journey,” she said, adding that a vehicle’s technical condition is vital for a safe trip.

Chamola appealed to the two-wheeler riders to use only BIS/ISI certified helmets, noting that standard helmets provide protection from serious injuries in case of accidents and play a crucial role in saving lives. She urged all drivers to adhere to prescribed speed limits, use seat belts and helmets at all times, avoid using mobile phones while driving, refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol and exercise extra caution during the monsoon.

She stated that the Transport department’s goal is not merely enforcement action but also to reduce road accidents through public awareness and ensure safe travel for every citizen. “With this objective in view, the Transport department will continue to conduct such special enforcement and awareness campaigns in the future,” she added.
