PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

Uttarakhand has become a fully literate State officially after the Governor Lieutenant General (retd) Gurmeet Singh approved the State government’s declaration on this matter.  Uttarakhand has achieved this milestone after meeting the standards of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the New India Literacy Programme. Under the Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society ( ULLAS) programme in Uttarakhand, a comprehensive identification of illiterate individuals was carried out. Notably, Uttarakhand has become the fifth fully literate state in the country after Mizoram, Goa, Tripura and Sikkim.

Hailing the Governor’s approval for the state-declared literacy achievement, the chief minister, Puskar Singh Dhami said that this milestone has been achieved through both the State government’s relentless efforts and the active participation of the state’s people. This success will help us achieve digital literacy and financial literacy among others in the coming days,” he said while congratulating the people as the CM and on behalf of the State government.

Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat said that the achievement is a proud moment for all the people of Uttarakhand.

Pertinently, the status of total literacy is determined under the central government’s ULLAS programme, which focuses on education for people over the age of 15. A State is considered “total literate” when the adult literacy rate reaches 95 per cent or more and the target of providing education to the non-literate population is achieved.
