The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is planning to establish an electronic-waste park to promote recycling, environmental awareness and scientific learning by converting discarded electronic items into artistic installations and utility products. Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey has directed the MCD Land department to identify a suitable site for the project. The initiative aims to address the growing challenge of electronic waste while promoting the concept of ‘Waste to Wealth’.

Pandey said that the proposed park will function as an interactive learning centre where school students can gain practical knowledge about electronics, recycling technologies, environmental conservation and scientific disposal of e-waste. The park will also feature information displays explaining the harmful effects of improper e-waste disposal and the importance of responsible recycling.

With the increasing use of electronic gadgets, e-waste has become one of the fastest-growing waste streams. Many discarded electronic devices continue to be mixed with household waste or dumped in open areas, leading to soil, water and air pollution. E-waste contains hazardous substances such as lead, mercury and cadmium, which pose serious risks to human health and the environment.

The park will showcase statues, artistic installations and other creative structures made from discarded electronic components, encouraging citizens to adopt sustainable recycling practices and supporting the principles of a circular economy through innovative reuse of waste materials.

Pandey also pointed out that although an e-waste recycling facility operates at Bhagwanpur in Haridwar district, only a limited quantity of electronic waste reaches the plant, while a significant portion continues to enter the informal waste stream, underlining the need for greater public awareness and improved collection systems.
