PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun

The Health department is planning to extend dengue survey and awareness activities by Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers and volunteers in Dehradun district till October to prevent a seasonal rise in cases. The chief medical officer Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma told The Pioneer that compared to last year, dengue cases have not increased in the district so far. However, a hike is usually seen in September.

“Considering this, the department is ensuring all prevention activities for dengue in the district,” he said.

He said that till August 3, 48 dengue cases have been reported in Dehradun district, 25 of Dehradun and 23 of other States and districts. Sharma informed that ASHA workers along with volunteers are currently conducting dengue surveys and awareness drives at their designated locations. With the monsoon underway, the chances of dengue cases are likely to increase. In view of this, ASHA workers and deployed volunteers have been directed to carry out activities in a more vigilant manner.

“They have been told to ensure surveys and awareness even on rainy days and the day after rainfall,” he added.

He informed that directions for dengue prevention have also been sent to the Education department through the district magistrate.

The CMO urged residents to take precautions during the monsoon season. He appealed to people to ensure there is no stagnant water around their homes and to check for it after every rainfall. He also advised residents to wear full-sleeve or covered clothes to avoid mosquito bites.

“If anyone develops fever during this season, they should get a dengue test done immediately or consult a doctor if symptoms appear,” Sharma said.

He also urged people to observe ‘Har Ravivar Dengue Par Vaar’ under which the residents are encouraged to inspect their homes for containers or areas where water can collect and drain them immediately.
