100 hospitalised after food poisoning from buckwheat flour

About 100 people were hospitalised on Sunday after consuming items made from buckwheat flour in Haridwar district. The persons who started complaining of health issues after consuming the buckwheat flour have been admitted to the district hospital, Mela hospital and some private hospitals in the district. The Haridwar district magistrate, chief medical officer, Haridwar MLA Madan Kaushik, chief development officer and other departmental officials concerned visited the patients in the hospital to check on their condition. The district magistrate Vinay Shankar Pande and the chief medical officer have issued advisory for the treatment of the patients.
On the first day of Chaitra Navratri on Saturday, many of the people who were fasting consumed buckwheat flour in the evening. According to sources, they soon started complaining of health issues including vomiting, dizziness, nervousness, diarrhea and weakness. The family members of such persons brought them to the district hospital where they were admitted for treatment of food poisoning. The number of persons complaining of food poisoning after consuming buckwheat flour increased further on Sunday and during the morning, there were 37 such patients in the district hospital, 20 in Bhoomanand hospital and about 40 in the Mela hospital. In addition to these patients, some have also been admitted in private hospitals. The district administration sprung into action after receiving information about the high number of food poisoning cases. District magistrate Vinay Shankar Pandey issued guidelines to district hospital chief medical superintendent Dr CP Tripathi and the Mela hospital chief medical officer Dr Rajesh Gupta for providing necessary treatment and facilities to the victims of food poisoning. Haridwar MLA and Bharatiya Janata Party State president Madan Kaushik assured the families of the patients that the best treatment will be facilitated for them.
Meanwhile, the Mela hospital CMO Dr Rajesh Gupta stated that 39 food poisoning patients had been admitted till Sunday morning in the hospital. These patients are residents of Chandi Ghat Basti, Brahmapuri and Shayampur who had complained of vomiting, dizziness, nervousness, diarrhoea and weakness after consuming buckwheat flour. CMS Dr Chandan Mishra said that the patients who had consumed buckwheat flour began to come to the district hospital from Saturday night and continued to arrive till Sunday morning with the number of such patients reaching 37 in the hospital. A team has also been sent by the district magistrate to Shyampur area which is said to be the center of such food poisoning cases.
