Remains of soldier cremated 38 years after attaining martyrdom

Lance Nayak Chandrashekhar Harbola’s mortal remains were recently discovered in Siachen
The remains of a soldier martyred in the Siachen glacier were brought to his home in Haldwani after 38 years on Wednesday. Lance Nayak Chandrashekhar Harbola’s two daughters Kavita and Babita lit his funeral pyre at the Chitrashila Ghat where he was cremated with full State honours. A large number of people paid homage to the martyr while raising slogans glorifying the nation and wishing immortality to the late soldier.
On May 29, 1984, during Operation Meghdoot, Lance Nayak Harbola and 18 other soldiers were killed in an avalanche at the world’s highest battlefield- Siachen. After a long duration of about 38 years, his remains finally reached his hometown after they were discovered in a bunker at Siachen last week.
Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Soldier Welfare minister Ganesh Joshi, the minister in-charge of Nainital district Rekha Arya and the leader of opposition, Yashpal Arya along with multitudes of citizens paid their last respects to Harbola on the occasion. Earlier, when the mortal remains of Harbola were brought to his residence in Dahriya area, the whole locality reverberated with patriotic slogans. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that Harbola’s sacrifice will always be remembered. He said that martyr Harbola will also be represented in the Sainya Dham being built in the State in memory of soldiers from Uttarakhand who had been martyred.
