The chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Geeta  Khanna conducted an on-site inspection of the disaster-affected Maldevta area of Raipur Block on Wednesday. She interacted with affected families and listened to their grievances. Khanna instructed the officials concerned to resolve the issues as soon as possible. She also directed the Block Education Officer (BEO) of Raipur to arrange for teachers in the nearby Government Inter College to continue the study of the affected children as soon as possible. She also asked the officials concerned to try to keep the children indulging in games or sports and reading besides providing counselling to ensure they cope up with the situation in a better way.“

The children must be terrified due to the recent events but it is important that fear of the disaster does not cloud the mind of the children for long. Every possible effort must be made to ensure they cope up better with time,” said the SCPCR chairperson. She also met three children living in the relief camp who lost both of their parents in the disaster. Khanna said that SCPCR will write to the Women Empowerment & Child Development (WECD) department to connect such children with schemes like Mukhyamantri Vatsalya Yojana (MVY) that can help them during these hard times. Some parents told her that they and their children had Ayushman cards which were swept away in the floods that helped them to access easy health care. Khanna assured them that the commission would write a letter to the health department in this regard.
