Additional CCTV cameras proposed in wards

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has proposed installing additional CCTV cameras in city wards to strengthen public safety and surveillance. Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said that the proposal is currently under consideration and further action will be taken accordingly.

The move comes months after Dehradun mayor Saurabh Thapliyal announced that CCTV cameras would be installed across all 100 municipal wards in 2026 to strengthen public safety. The announcement was made in February while marking the MCD board’s completion of one year under his tenure.

Pandey said that more than 550 CCTV cameras have already been installed at key locations across Dehradun under the Smart City project. These cameras are monitored through a control room operated at the level of the Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA).

The proposed expansion would extend surveillance coverage beyond the existing key locations to different municipal wards. The move is part of the MCD’s broader focus on technology-driven urban management.

During the past year, the civic body has also strengthened technology-based monitoring through an Integrated Control and Command Centre, GPS-based tracking of municipal vehicles and a digital grievance redressal system. Drone-based waste monitoring and the AI-based municipal chatbot Nigam Saarthi have also been introduced.

Thapliyal had earlier said that the CCTV network would be expanded to all 100 wards alongside ward-level development works.

Pandey said that data privacy and security provisions would be kept in mind while expanding the network. All necessary safeguards related to privacy and data protection would be followed during the installation and operation of additional cameras, he said.

The number and locations of the additional cameras will be finalised as the proposal moves forward, Pandey added.
