The State Agriculture and Rural Development minister Ganesh Joshi inaugurated the Silk Expo 2025, organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Textiles, Silk Mark Organisation of India, Central Silk Board, Silk Directorate of Uttarakhand and Uttarakhand Cooperative Silk Federation in Dehradun on Wednesday. Thereafter, he inspected the stalls put up at the expo. During the inspection, he expressed his happiness over the sarees prepared by the powerloom given by him.
More than 26 participants from 12 States have exhibited their silk products at this exhibition where high-quality silk fabrics, diverse weaving styles and designs are available to customers under one roof.
While extending his best wishes to the silk entrepreneurs and artisans, he mentioned that Uttarakhand’s mulberry silk is considered the best in the country. “For this reason, the State is known as the ‘Bowl of Bivoltine Silk’,” he said, adding that currently, approximately 7,500 silkworm- rearing families across the State are producing 312.02 metric tons of mulberry silk cocoons.
He further explained that earlier, the quality of silk weaving had been quite low in Uttarakhand. “Things have improved much thanks to the special efforts we made in this matter. The Cooperative Silk Federation not just trains traditional weavers but has set up three power- looms at the Growth Centre in Selaqui which have been producing quality textiles.
Subsequently, the Doon Silk Brand has now established itself nationally,” he declared. “Last year, the federation produced silk fabrics worth approximately Rs 5 crore, earning a profit of Rs one crore,” he added.
He praised the fashion show ‘Rivayat-e-Resham-2’ presented by the girls of the Silk Directorate and the B S Negi Women’s Technical Training Institute, ONGC, during the Silk Expo.
On this occasion, the minister felicitated the employees who have done good work in sericulture production.
Among others present were the former Silk Federation president Ajit Chaudhary and MLA Rajpur, Khajan Das.
