PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Dehradun police have uncovered a possible illegal religious conversion in the case of a Bangladeshi citizen arrested in the city on November 20 for staying in India with forged identity documents. Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the accused, Mamun Hasan, a resident of Mujibnagar in Bangladesh, married Reena Chauhan from Tyuni in Bangladesh after changing her name to Farzana Akhtar.

He stated that Hasan had been living in Dehradun using forged documents under the identity of Reena’s former husband, Sachin Chauhan. He and Reena were arrested by the Nehru Colony police and the Local Intelligence Unit in connection with fake Aadhaar, PAN and other identity cards. He said that during the probe, they recovered several forged Bangladeshi certificates indicating that Reena’s religion and name had been changed prior to the marriage in Bangladesh. Singh added that police are coordinating with agencies in Bangladesh to verify the documents and trace all individuals involved in arranging false identities.

The police are examining all angles of the case, including the preparation of forged Indian and foreign documents and the illegal stay of the accused in Dehradun, he said. According to the SSP, the religious conversion aspect has added a new dimension to the ongoing investigation. Police are working to determine whether anyone else facilitated the conversion or provided assistance in the creation of forged certificates. The case falls under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, as well as the Passport (Entry into India) Act and the Foreigners Act and is being investigated under Operation Kalnemi. He said that further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
