PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Dehradun district administration has claimed that its Modern Intensive Care Centre (MICC) has become a game-changer, successfully rescuing more than 325 children from begging and child labour. Officials said that built at a cost of approximately Rs 157.60 lakh in Sadhuram Inter College on Raja Road in Dehradun, this centre is the first of its kind in the State, aimed at rehabilitating children involved in begging and child labour and connecting them to mainstream education.

Officials added that the centre is focused on the overall development of rescued children through activities such as Yoga, music, sports and other creative pursuits, emphasising mental and behavioural improvement. Since its inception, over 200 children have been enrolled in schools, showcasing the success of this initiative. The officials also informed that to combat beggary and child labour, the district administration has formed a special inter-departmental team that includes representatives from the Home Guard, Child Helpline, Education department, Labour department, Police department and various non-governmental organisations. This team is effectively conducting rescue operations through coordination. Three special rescue vehicles have been deployed to identify and quickly rescue children involved in begging throughout the city, conducting regular patrols to accelerate the campaign. Additionally, 16 Home Guard personnel have been stationed at major intersections and sensitive locations to ensure that children can be brought to safety immediately.
