Cool rainy spell to continue across State today, warnings issued

The comparatively cool and rainy spell is expected to continue in the State on Friday with rain forecast in the plains and lower reaches with snowfall likely in the higher altitude regions. The recent change in weather has brought much needed relief from the heat with the maximum temperature actually dropping a degree below normal after staying a few notches above normal for days.

According to the State Meteorological Centre, most places in the State are likely to witness light to moderate rain/thunderstorm/snowfall (at altitudes of 3,000 metres and above). An orange warning has been issued regarding the possibility of heavy rain/heavy snow/thunderstorms accompanied with lightning/hail/squall (wind speed up to 50-60 kmph) likely to occur at isolated places in Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts of Uttarakhand. A yellow warning has also been issued regarding the possibility of intense spells of rain likely to occur at isolated places in the State’s mountains. Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning/hail/gusty winds (wind speed up to 40-50 kmph) is likely to occur at isolated places in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Tehri, Pauri, Almora, Nainital and Champawat districts today.

During the past 24 hours, the maximum temperatures remained appreciably below normal to normal in plains and appreciably below normal to markedly below normal in hills of Uttarakhand. The maximum temperatures are likely to fall by three to five degrees Celsius during the next couple of days in various parts of the State.

The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness a generally cloudy sky on Friday. Light to moderate rain/thunderstorms accompanied with lightning/hail/gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are likely to occur in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 22 degrees Celsius and 14 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun today.

Meanwhile, people in Dehradun woke up to drenched surroundings on Thursday with rainfall bringing the temperatures down during the past night. The weather is forecast to remain similar with temperatures slated to drop further here on Friday. Various parts of the State witnessed light rain during the day and preceding night. The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in various parts of the State on Thursday were 26.9 degrees Celsius and 16.8 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 26.6 degrees Celsius and 18.6 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 15.5 degrees Celsius and 6.5 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 15.9 degrees Celsius and 6.2 degrees Celsius in New Tehri.
