Dehradun lawyers’ strike suspended after written government assurance, faction opposes

After nearly a month of protests and work boycott, the strike by lawyers in Dehradun was suspended on Monday. While a faction of the Bar Association of Dehradun decided to suspend the strike following a written assurance from the government regarding construction of chambers for the advocates, a faction objected to this.

Bar association president Manmohan Kandwal said the government’s written commitment is enough to suspend the protest for now, adding that court proceedings would resume immediately. “The work will be carried out for everyone; for now, the strike is suspended,” he said, emphasising that the administration had formally acknowledged the demand for chambers.

But the association’s consensus fractured as senior leaders opposed the decision. Former bar association president Rajeev Sharma dismissed the suspension, arguing that advocates needed concrete action rather than assurances. Sharma said his faction will continue the strike and warned that lawyers appearing in court during the protest would face disciplinary measures.
