PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

A 55-year-old Uttarakhand Purv Sainik Kalyan Nigam Limited (UPNL) sanitation worker at Government Doon Medicial College Hospital (GDMC) died by suicide on Monday following the allegation that he had inappropriately touched a 12-year-old boy inside the hospital lift. Later, a video was circulated on the social media purportedly alleging sexual abuse of the boy. The worker, identified as Vijay Valmiki, lived in the Raipur area.  The boy is learnt to have come to the hospital with his parents on Sunday.

Vijay’s family said that the video which had hit the social media had forced him to commit suicide. They alleged that it was shared without checking its authenticity or investigating the complete incident.

The deceased son, Ajay said that Vijay had come under tremendous mental pressure following the video’s circulation on social media.

Police said they have started an investigation into the matter after the deceased’s son lodged complaint at Raipur police station. “We are trying to find out what led to Vijay’s death. Police are also checking the viral video and the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident,” a police officer investigating the matter said.

Queried on the matter, the GDMC principal Dr Geeta Jain said that the person who had shared the video was not connected with the hospital or the college. “A committee has been formed to investigate the matter. Further action will be taken after the committee submits its report,” she added.
