Dreaded canine attack: Owners should seek guidance before adopting dogs

Experts advised that prospective pet owners, particularly those considering a dog, should seek guidance on responsible dog ownership from professionals or knowledgeable individuals. This suggestion comes in the wake of a recent incident in which a neighbour’s two Rottweilers mauled 75-year-old Kaushalya Devi in Dehradun. Upon being admitted to a hospital, she had several stitches done on her badly lacerated head, arms and legs.

Expressing outrage over the incident, the experts have outlined essential care practices for pet owners, especially dog owners.

A representative of the Animal Welfare Board of India and a member of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Rubina Nitin Iyer expressed her concerns and suggested important guidelines to be followed by the dog owners.

She said that there are several important considerations for pet owners to be aware of when it comes to dog ownership. “Otherwise, they may face various challenges,” she warned.

According to her, individuals intending to adopt a pet should prioritise obtaining one from a reputable, registered store as they raise their dogs according to established standards. “Additionally, potential pet owners should select a breed that suits their home environment. For instance, Pit Bull breeds tend to be highly energetic and if they lack adequate space to expel that energy, they can become frustrated and exhibit aggressive behaviour, which might lead to unfortunate incidents. Additionally, it is crucial for pet owners to ensure their dogs are vaccinated, dewormed and registered with the municipal bodies,” she said, adding that authorities should take action against individuals involved in breeding activities.

Iyer further highlighted that the primary guideline for homeowners keeping dogs is to seek knowledge from veterinarians or specialists like canine trainers, behaviourists and groomers to effectively manage their pets.

Further, a veterinarian based in the city, Gaurav Tiwari said that to avoid any unfortunate events, the pet owners should take certain precautions. “They should first educate themselves about the proper methods of dog ownership and dog care from those deemed experts in this field. Second, once the vaccination and deworming regimen is completed, pet owners should ensure that their dogs are registered. Further, it is important to note that some dogs may become anxious or irritable due to loud noises or certain colours, which could lead to biting incidents. Pet owners should try to understand their dog’s behaviour and contact a veterinarian immediately if they notice something wrong in them,” he suggested.
