An elderly man from Dehradun was defrauded of Rs 15.69 lakh by cyber fraudsters who impersonated a bank official. According to the police complaint, 77-year-old Pramod Goyal, a resident of PNB Enclave on Shimla Bypass Road in the Patelnagar area, received a Whatsapp call on January 3.

The caller introduced himself as an officer of a Punjab National Bank and asked about net banking services. When the victim refused, the caller said the process needed to be cancelled and asked for ATM card details. Believing the caller, the elderly man shared his ATM details. Soon after, he started receiving messages showing money being withdrawn from his bank accounts on different dates. A total amount of Rs 15,69,882 was withdrawn through net banking from several accounts. Shocked by the transactions, the victim visited the bank, where the manager informed him that all withdrawals had been made online. After realising that he had been duped, the victim approached the Cyber Crime Police Station and submitted a complaint. The police registered a zero FIR in this case. Police officials said that the fraud was carried out by misusing ATM and net banking details. The matter is being investigated, they added.
