Govt to encourage specialists for 6-month deputation in mountains: Uniyal

Health minister Subodh Uniyal said that considering the fact that specialist doctors are unwilling to work for long in the mountainous regions, he is planning to introduce a system of deputing them for six months in the mountains. He said that since specialist doctors are also logically concerned about the education of their children and family security, he is considering the option of doing the needful for their families in Dehradun and Haldwani. He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the World Health Day event organised at Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine and Maternity Centre here on Tuesday.
Uniyal said that the concept of Viksit Bharat cannot be achieved if the citizens are unhealthy. He said, “My aim as the Health minister is to ensure that the resources and manpower available to use is used to the full extent for the welfare of the public,” he said. Citing the complaints the government has been getting for some years now, he cited the example of Narendranagar where the OPD was busy and all the required doctors were present. Now the doctors, especially the specialists are unwilling to work in the mountains, hew said. “We understand the situation and considering this we are planning to deploy specialists for a six-month period in the mountains while also facilitating the needful for their families in the plains,” he added.
Orthopaedic surgeon and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Guwahati president Dr BKS Sanjay said that he will strive to replicate his efforts in the north east. Citing statistics about road accidents in the nation, he said that road safety should become a national movement.
Rajya Sabha member Naresh Bansal, Padma Shri recipients Kalyan Singh Rawat, Kanhaiya Lal Pokhriyal, orthopaedic surgeon Dr SN Singh and Dr Gaurav Sanjay also addressed the gathering on the occasion.
