The Uttarakhand Mahila Congress held a march to Raj Bhawan on Monday to protest against the increasing crime against women in the State.
The party workers assembled at Rajiv Bhawan led by the State president of Mahila Congress, Jyoti Rautela. Holding placards they marched to the Raj Bhawan. However, their march was stopped by the police near Hathibadkala. A skirmish between the Mahila Congress workers and police occurred at the barricading following which the workers courted arrest.
Addressing the workers, Rautela said that crimes against women have increased in the last three years. The cases of murder, rape and other crimes against women have increased considerably. She said that in last three years, 1,822 cases of rapes have been reported and the 318 bodies of unknown women have been recovered in the State and out of them only 87 were identified.
A total of 10,500 women have been reported missing in the last five years and out of then 767 are still untraced. A total of 1,03,947 cases related to crime against women have been registered in the last three years. Rautela said that one case of rape and murder are being reported every month in the State. She said a trail of crime against women started in the State with brutal murder and rape of Ankita Bhandari. Rautela alleged that due to involvement of BJP leaders in such cases, the government takes no steps to curb them.
