Man arrested for cheating job seekers of Rs 1.20 crore

The police have arrested a man who cheated several people of Rs 1.20 crore by promising them jobs abroad on Saturday. The accused was nabbed by the Nehru Colony police station and presented in court which sent him to judicial custody.
According to the police, the accused Upendra Singh Thapa (38) claimed that he could arrange jobs in Finland. He took large amounts of money from many people, saying the money was needed for visa processing and work permits. He told the victims that he had strong contacts and could easily get them employment abroad.
One of the victims, Narjang Kumar from Himachal Pradesh said that he and others were asked to pay Rs 10 lakh each. Trusting the accused, the victims transferred money to his bank account and also paid cash. Later, they were given job contract letters, which were later found to be fake. In February 2025, the victims received emails from the embassy stating that their visas were rejected because the documents submitted were forged. Their passports were returned with refusal letters. After this, the victims realized they had been cheated and filed a complaint with the police.
A case was registered under various sections related to cheating and forgery, along with provisions of the Emigration Act. After investigation and based on informer input, the police arrested Upendra Singh Thapa from Transport Nagar, Dehradun.
According to the police, during questioning, the accused admitted that he cheated several people and collected a total of Rs 1.20 crore. The police produced him before the court, which sent him to jail under judicial custody.
