Dehradun mayor Saurabh Thapliyal on Monday inspected the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre and municipal cow shelter (Kanji House) in Kedarpuram to review ongoing construction work, animal welfare arrangements and facility standards.
The mayor assessed the progress of construction at the ABC centre and directed the officials to complete the work within the stipulated time frame. The officials said that land has been identified for a new dog shelter and construction will begin soon in accordance with the guidelines of the Supreme Court of India. According to the officials, the number of dog kennels at the ABC facility is being increased from 72 to 300. Separate kennels will be made operational for housing aggressive dogs. The centre currently conducts 20–22 sterilisation surgeries daily in its operation theatre. Senior municipal veterinary officer Dr Varun Agrawal said that the training centre at the ABC facility is also being upgraded and is expected to function as a State-level training hub in the coming months.
The mayor directed that construction materials, sanitation, operation theatre standards, recovery areas and medical facilities be maintained in line with scientific and humane practices. He said that the effective implementation of the ABC programme would help control the stray animal population and reduce incidents of human-animal conflict and road accidents.
Thapliyal also inspected the Kanji House which currently houses 296 rescued stray and injured cattle. He reviewed the arrangements related to fodder, water supply, cleanliness and medical care. The officials said that the overall maintenance of the facility was satisfactory. Municipal commissioner Namami Bansal was also present.
