The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) faces an impossible task of meeting its Rs 75 crore property tax collection target for the 2025–26 financial year, with about Rs 18 crore yet to be collected in the one day remaining before the March 31 deadline.
Officials on Monday issued a fresh appeal to residents and commercial property owners to clear their pending dues immediately to avoid penalties from April 1. MCD tax superintendent Rahul Kainthola said that the corporation has collected around Rs 57 crore so far against a target of Rs 75 crore. This leaves a gap of nearly Rs 18 crore to be recovered on the final day. Officials acknowledged that bridging such a large gap within a single day would be difficult, though they remain hopeful that last-minute payments could improve the final tally.
To support last-minute payments, tax counters have been kept functional at MCD and residents can also pay through online modes, Kainthola said. The corporation has appealed to property owners not to wait till the final hours and clear dues at the earliest. From April 1 onwards, penalties and interest will be levied on unpaid amounts as per the provisions of the MCD, it added.
MCD officials said that the property tax plays an important role in funding civic works such as sanitation, road maintenance and basic infrastructure across city wards. Over the past month, the corporation had claimed to have intensified its outreach efforts by issuing reminders and notifications to defaulters as part of a final push to improve collections before the end of the financial year.
