Monitoring stepped up in Doon ahead of Swachh Survekshan 2026

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) claims to have stepped up sanitation monitoring across the city as part of its preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2026, with officials directing ward teams to improve waste collection coverage and address problem areas.

The officials claimed that ward-wise reviews have been carried out to identify gaps in sanitation services. Based on these assessments, field staff and implementing agencies have been asked to focus on local issues such as roadside dumping, irregular waste collection and low level of segregation.

The corporation officials further stated that the MCD has also issued warnings to NGOs and private agencies responsible for sanitation work in certain wards where performance has been found unsatisfactory. Officials added that agencies have been told to improve services within a fixed timeline.

At present, door-to-door garbage collection coverage in the city is estimated to be between 77 and 80 per cent. The civic body has now set a target to move towards full coverage before the survey period. Teams have been told to expand collection services in uncovered pockets and ensure regular movement of garbage collection vehicles in all wards.

Alongside this, ward-level campaigns are being carried out to promote segregation of wet and dry waste at source, the officials averred. Residents are being encouraged to cooperate with sanitation workers and follow collection schedules to help improve the processing of municipal waste.

The corporation officials said that the sanitation teams have also been instructed to monitor locations where garbage dumping is frequently reported and prevent the formation of new dumping points.

They further claimed that the corporation is focusing on strengthening field-level monitoring and public participation as part of its effort to improve the city’s performance in Swachh Survekshan 2026. Cooperation from residents will remain important in maintaining cleanliness standards across wards in the coming months, they added. In 2025, the MCD secured 62nd position in the Swachh Survekshan survey.
