As part of Muharram observance, members of both the Shia and Sunni communities took out mourning processions with Tazias in the lake city of Nainital on Friday. A large number of devotees participated, remembering the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and the martyrs of Karbala.

During the mourning procession, people paid homage to the sacrifice of Imam Hussain, expressing their reverence and grief. The Shia community mourned and expressed their condolences for Imam Hussain. During the procession, people carrying tazias travelled through various routes to reach the Imambara.

Misham Abbas Naqvi, who arrived from Moradabad, explained that during the month of Muharram, the Tazia procession is taken out to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. He explained that the Tazia procession is a symbolic replica of Imam Hussain’s tomb, which is taken out as a mark of respect and mourning for his martyrdom.

Another participant, Mustaq Ali Khan said that Muharram is being observed in Nainital for nearly 200 years. “For the past 10 days, programmes have been held at the Imambara Mota Pani in a spirit of mourning and atonement,” he added.
