NHAI projects to free Haridwar from jams before Ardh Kumbh

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun

With the Ardh Kumbh 2027 less than seven months away, Haridwar is set to receive significant relief from traffic jams due to two key NHAI projects: the 51 km six-lane spur to Haridwar and the 15 km Haridwar bypass both of which have entered their final stages. These projects will ease traffic congestion within the city and provide a smoother travel experience for pilgrims and travellers coming from other States.

According to officials, nearly 92 per cent of the work on the 51-kilometre-long, six-lane, access-controlled spur to Haridwar has been completed. So far, 46 kilometres of this road have been finished. This corridor will connect the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor with Haridwar, starting from Halgoya Mustakam and reaching the existing National Highway 58 at Bhaderi Rajputana. Upon completion, vehicles coming to Haridwar from Delhi, Meerut, Saharanpur and Western Uttar Pradesh will have an alternative, faster and seamless route into the city.

Officials also reported that approximately 77 per cent of the 15-kilometre-long Haridwar Bypass (package 1) has been completed, with nine kilometres of four-lane road finished so far. This bypass will begin in Bahadrabad and end near the Chandi Devi Temple on NH-34. Once operational, it is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the inner city, including areas like Har Ki Paudi, Chandi Chowk and Shankaracharya Chowk, thereby relieving traffic jams for both pilgrims and local residents.

The officials emphasised that after completing these two projects, Haridwar’s traffic system will undergo a major transformation. The spur to Haridwar will provide an alternative route for vehicles coming from other states before entering the city, while the Haridwar bypass will help reduce unnecessary traffic congestion within the city. Additionally, flyovers, vehicular underpasses (VUPs) and service roads are being constructed at congested junctions such as Purkazi, Manglaur, Bahadrabad and Jwalapur on the Haridwar-Muzaffarnagar National Highway. The completion of these projects will enhance safety at accident-prone locations, reduce traffic congestion at intersections and ensure more orderly vehicular movement during the upcoming Ardh Kumbh Mela, they said.

Notably, to make traffic safer and smarter, NHAI is also implementing an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) on the Haridwar-Muzaffarnagar, Spur to Haridwar and Haridwar Bypass routes. This system will monitor traffic in real time, provide essential information to road users, ensure compliance with traffic rules and offer prompt assistance in emergency situations. NHAI aims to complete these critical projects before Ardh Kumbh 2027.
